About the Conference
The Doha International Conference for the Family followed upon the
celebration of the International Year for the Family and highlighted
and collected the family-related efforts of governments, academicians,
faith-based organizations, non-governmental organizations (NGO's), and
members of civil society during a year-long series of events. The conference
reaffirmed and emphasized the pressing need to strengthen the family
in performing its vital social role and reminded the world that the
family is the fundamental group unit of society and is entitled to protection
and support.
This Global Forum consisted of a series of global pro-family meetings
and discussions: The Doha International Conference for the Family was
a two-day conference in Doha, Qatar on November 29 and 30, 2004, under
the patronage of Her Highness ah bint Nasser Al-Misned, Consort of His
Highness the Emir of Qatar, and President of the Supreme Council for
Family Affairs, State of Qatar.
The Conference represents an international assemblage bringing together
international VIPs, governmental organizations, non-governmental organizations
(NGOs), scholars, academicians and civil society leaders who were invited
by the State of Qatar to participate for the purpose to call upon all
nations of the world to restate the principles related to family life
embodied in the Universal Declaration on Human Rights, and to adhere
to values and endeavor to promote the role of the family as it is the
natural and fundamental group unit of society and is entitled to protection
by society and state.
The Conference concluded its events by adopting the Doha Declaration
which carries a message to the states of the world emphasizing the importance
of restating the family and calls upon governments to be committed to
promote the role of family and its protection as a fundamental unit
of which society is made. The Supreme Council for Family Affairs, in
cooperation with pro-family NGO's, is preparing a book that compiles
the most prominent events and academic findings of the Conference.
